Forests are Growing in the Sahara Desert

The Great Green Wall project is a desert greenery plan to create a long line of trees and plants across the Sahara desert Sahel region.

The Great Green Wall project is a desert greenery plan started in 2007 to create a long line of trees and plants across a part of Africa called the Sahel region. The Sahel is a place just below the Sahara desert. The project was started by the African Union, a group of African;twenty-two countries working together.

Growing a Forest in the Sahara Desert

The main idea behind the Great Green Wall is to stop the desert from spreading further south and to make the land better for people and nature.

The Great Green Wall project involves multiple African countries working together to combat desertification and promote sustainable land management.

The project began in 2007 when African countries realized that the Sahara desert was growing, and it was causing problems for the people and the environment. They wanted to do something about it, so they came up with the idea of planting trees and vegetation to fight against desertification.

To make the Great Green Wall happen, twenty-two African countries agreed to work together.

They started planting trees and other plants in areas where the land was dry and damaged. They also used special techniques to help the soil become healthier so that it could support more life. Local communities and experts from around the world joined in, and they all worked together to make the project happen.

Over the years, the Great Green Wall project has achieved some successes. Many trees have been planted, and the land is becoming greener. This is helping to stop the desert from spreading further.

The project is also creating new opportunities for people living in the Sahel region. They can now grow crops, raise livestock, and earn money by working with the trees and plants. It is making the land more productive and providing better lives for the people.

The Great Green Wall project has also been recognized internationally, and many countries and organizations are supporting it with money and resources. It has become a symbol of African countries coming together to solve common problems and protect the environment.

The Pan Africa Agency for the Great Green Wall (PAAGGW) and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) are both important organizations that help with the Great Green Wall project. They make sure that countries and people are working together to create a green wall of trees and plants in the Sahara desert, and they also fight against desertification in other parts of the world.

During the One Planet Summit in January 2021, President Emmanuel Macron of France and other world leaders announced the start of something called the Great Green Wall Accelerator. They promised to give $14.3 billion in new money to support it.

The Great Green Wall Accelerator is going to be managed by a group called the Pan Africa Agency for the Great Green Wall (PAAGGW), which will work closely with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

Pan Africa Agency for the Great Green Wall (PAAGGW): This is a special group that is in charge of coordinating and overseeing the Great Green Wall project. They bring together different countries, organizations, and people who are working on the initiative. Their goal is to make sure everyone is working together and helping each other. They also help with planning, monitoring progress, and finding ways to make the project even better.

United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD): This is a part of the United Nations, which is like a big group of countries that work together. The UNCCD focuses on fighting against desertification, which is when land becomes dry and turns into a desert.

They help countries that are affected by desertification by providing support, sharing knowledge, and encouraging cooperation between nations. They want to stop the spread of deserts and make sure people have enough resources to live sustainably.

Trees in the desert

Challenges to creating a green line of trees through the desert.

The Sahara desert and the Sahel region, where the Great Green Wall is being implemented, face water scarcity. Water availability is crucial for the survival and growth of trees and plants. Finding sustainable water sources and implementing efficient irrigation systems are significant challenges.

The Sahel region experiences extreme temperatures, with scorching heat during the day and cold nights. These harsh conditions make it challenging for trees and plants to survive. Selecting suitable tree species that can adapt to these conditions and implementing appropriate climate control measures are necessary but difficult tasks.

The areas where the Great Green Wall is being established often suffer from land degradation, where the soil becomes less fertile and more prone to erosion. Rehabilitating degraded land and improving soil quality are crucial challenges in order to ensure the success of the project.

There are still challenges to overcome. Planting trees and making the land green is not an easy task. It requires a lot of effort, time, and resources. Sometimes, there are also political issues or lack of water that make it difficult to keep the project going.

But the Great Green Wall project continues to inspire people and show that we can make a positive difference in the world by working together to protect our environment and improve our lives.
