The Trans-Gambia Highway: A Paved Road to Economic Development

The highway stretches for approximately 1,067 kilometers or 663 miles and is an important transportation link between the two countries, as well as with other parts of the region. Trans-Gambia Highway was completed in 2015, and consists of a two-lane paved road that crosses the Gambia River via the Senegambia Bridge.

The highway starts in the town of Farafenni in the North Bank Region of The Gambia and crosses the Gambia River via the Senegambia Bridge, which was completed in 2019, before continuing into Senegal.

Trans-Gambia Highway serves as a critical transportation link between Senegal and The Gambia. The highway is an important route for commercial trucks, as well as for tourists and other travelers moving between the two countries.

Trans-Gambia Highway reflects its function as a crucial transnational transportation artery connecting the two West African countries.

The construction of the bridge was a major milestone for the region, as it replaced the old ferry system that was previously used to transport vehicles across the river. The new bridge has significantly reduced travel times and improved the efficiency of trade and transportation between Senegal and The Gambia.

The Trans-Gambia Highway is also an important part of the Trans-African Highway network, which is a series of highways that run across the African continent. The highway is designated as part of the Trans-African Highway which connects Dakar, Senegal, to Lagos, Nigeria.

The completion of the Trans-Gambia Highway has had a significant impact on the economy and social development of the region, as it has improved access to markets, healthcare, and education. It has also facilitated the movement of people and goods, which has helped to drive economic growth and reduce poverty in the area.

About the African Union Trans African Highway.

The Trans-African Highway is a network of roads and highways being developed by the African Union (AU) to connect all regions of Africa, both within individual countries and across national borders.

The network consists of nine highways that traverse the continent from north to south and east to west, with a total length of over 60,000 kilometers or 37,000 miles.

The highways are designated by the AU as the backbone of the continent's transportation infrastructure, and they are intended to facilitate the movement of goods, services, and people across Africa.

The Trans African highways are numbered from 1 to 9.

Each highway connects different African regions and countries.

Highway 1 runs along the western coast of Africa from Mauritania to South Africa.

Highway 2 runs along the eastern coast from Cairo to Cape Town.

Highway 3 connects the coastal countries of West Africa.

Highway 4 links Cairo to Dakar.

Highways 5 and 6 connect East and West Africa.

Highways 7, 8, and 9 link southern Africa to the rest of the continent.

The Trans-African Highway project is still ongoing, with some highways already completed while others are still under construction or planning stages.

The development of the highways requires significant investments in infrastructure, including bridges, tunnels, and road construction, as well as political cooperation between the countries involved.

The Trans-African Highway network is expected to have a significant impact on the continent's economy, facilitating trade and regional integration.
