South African Square Melktart Slab Pie


1 sheet of puff pastry

1/2 cup of sugar

1/4 cup of cornstarch

1/4 teaspoon of salt

4 cups of whole milk

4 large eggs

2 tablespoons of butter

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg


Preheat your oven to 375°F.

Roll out the puff pastry and place it in a 9x13-inch baking dish. Trim the edges and prick the bottom with a fork.

Whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a large saucepan. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.

Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture boils. Reduce the heat to low and cook for 2 minutes, whisking constantly.

Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the filling is set and the crust is golden brown.
