There are three distinctive types of goats
More than sixty recognized breeds of goats exist in the world however; there are only three distinctive types of goats, dairy goats, meat goats and Angora goats.

The first are dairy goats, raised primarily for milk. More people in the world drink goat milk than people who drink cow milk. Goat milk is comparable nutritionally to cow milk, but goat milk has smaller fat globules and is easier for people to digest who are lactose intolerant.

The second type of goats are produced for meat and often goats are sold for their meat during the Easter holiday time. Cabrito stands for roasted meat from goat kids 4-8 weeks of age. Its main use is for barbecue meat, and it is highly sought after by certain ethnic groups. Chevon is meat from an older goat weighing around 48-60 pounds or 6-9 months old at the time of slaughter. Of these two types, cabrito is the tenderest. In the United States, early 70 percent of all goats and kids are used primarily for meat production.

Lastly, Angora goats are raised primarily for their wool, which is known as mohair. Most people are not aware that the luxurious texture of their favorite Mohair sweater they love wearing is actually goat wool. The nutritional needs of goats are a subject that requires a very solid understanding of food sources and the mineral and nutrients that comprise such food sources.

Female goats are called does or sometimes doelings if they are less than a year old. Males are called bucks or bucklings. Young goats are called kids. Goat is a staple food source around the world’s diet for centuries. Goat is the main source of animal protein to many people in many different nations including Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Greece, India, Italy, Mexico, Pakistan and many countries in South America. Goat is naturally very lean having only little muscular fat. Goat meat is low saturated fat and is considered a healthier red meat.
