Walmart is known as Massmart in Africa and Massmart operates more than 443 stores in it home office country of South Africa and in 13 other African countries with a BBBEE level 4 score.

Walmart staked its claim in the growing African business market in 2010 under the store names of Game, Cambridge, Game Foodco, Makro, Builders Warehouse, Builders Express, Builders Superstore, Builders Trade Depot, CBW, Rhino Cash and Carry and Jumbo Cash and Carry. 

BBBEE stands for Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment and is a means of equalizing the rights of black people who were formerly disadvantaged during apartheid, Massmart BBBEE is a level four 86.06 score out of 100.

Massmart's Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Codes of Good Practice or B-BBEE score is 82.06. The Department of Trade and Industry or dti B-BBEE policy is designed to ensure economic transformation and redistribution within the South African corporate sector to the benefit of non white racial groups who were previously discriminated against.

B-BBEE compliance is measured by means of a scorecard with a maximum of 100 points. On May 31, 2019, the policy of B-BBEE changed but still helps Blacks formerly discriminated against under Apartheid in corporate Africa.

Walmart's Massmart was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Limited in July 2000 and currently Massmart home office is located in South Africa. Walmart International acquired a majority stake in Massmart in 2011 and is now located in 13 African countries. Massmart is the second-largest distributor of consumer goods in Africa, the leading retailer of general merchandise, liquor and home improvement equipment and supplies, and the leading wholesaler of basic foods.

Massmart has four more Builders stores planned for Mozambique and Zambia and have secured sites in Kenya and Angola for Game. Massmart operates in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, ESwatini, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa and Zambia.
