Hoender Tamatie Bredie is Afrikaans South African Chicken Tomato Stew recipe made with onions, tomatoes, apricot jam, and many spices.

4 large chicken thighs

2 tablespoons chicken fat

4 onions, sliced

1 chili pepper, finely chopped

6 large tomatoes chopped

2 large white potatoes diced

1 tablespoon minced garlic

2 tablespoons apricot jam

1 teaspoon curry

½ teaspoon nutmeg

½ teaspoon cinnamon

2 bay leafs

Salt and pepper to taste

8 cups of water


In a large pot, lightly brown the meat in the fat, remove and set aside. Using the same pot sauté onions with the jam and garlic. Add all ingredients to the pot cover and simmer for one hour. Serve with jasmine rice.
